Windsurf Holidays To Rhodes
Rhodes is the second largest of the Greek islands and has long been a very popular summer sun holiday destination with Northern Europeans - there are lots of flights from many regional airports. Rhodes Town in the North of the island is a mixture of historical buildings, cobbled small streets lined with shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as having buzzing nightlife if you want it. Rhodes can be a little bucket and spade in places but also has considerable charm and character.
Leading southwards from Rhodes Town is a long stretch of hotel-lined beaches, including Ixia and Ialyssos where the best windsurfing is and a brilliant selection of windsurf centres. Within walking distance of the windsurf locations, there are a number of well-priced hotels as well as a superb luxury hotel. This makes Rhodes a great place for a short-haul family windsurf holiday as well as a more focused pure windsurf trip for solo travellers or firends.
The Windsurfing In Northern Rhodes
On the North west coast of Rhodes the island gets the well known Meltemi wind, specifically in Ixia and Ialyssos. This is a thermal wind which is generated from the venturi effect between Greek islands, Turkey and the hills of Mont Smith. During the summer months of May to September, almost every afternoon, the wind picks up to a nice 20 knots! The average wind range is between 16 and 25 knots.
The wind blows across on shore at the windsurf spot. There is a great sandy beach entry and a great flat water section, especially good for beginners in the mornings. By the time of the wind kicks in some small waves start to swell, creating text-book bump and jump weather.
Other Activities In Ialyssos
As well as having some of the best beaches in the Aegean, Rhodes is very mountainous, which is great if you love exploring and mount biking. Rhodes Town has wonderfull shopping, restaurants and pubs, people from all over the world pay the island a visit during the summer, so it has a truly international feel. Take an excursion into the island to get away from the tourist areas and you will see a completely different side of Rhodes. Inland are picturesque hills and valleys and further south, deserted beaches. Rhodes has a long history and this is reflected in the castles and buildings that still remain and legends associated with many places.
Nightlife
Nightlife can be as much or as little as you want. Ialysos is a busy area and there are lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. There are wonderful tavernas serving Greek meze (little plates of everything imaginable), ouzo and the best fresh fish you will find anywhere and we highly recommend that you try the local wines. Rhodes Town is just 5 kilometres away and has a selection of quaint quayside restaurants. There are also several nightclubs and late bars.
