Arusha

Arusha is a vibrant city in northern Tanzania, often referred to as the gateway to some of Africa's most renowned natural wonders. Nestled at the foot of Mount Meru, it offers a stunning backdrop of lush greenery and distant mountain peaks.

The city is a starting point for safaris to world-famous destinations like Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park. Arusha itself is rich in culture, with bustling markets, craft shops, and local eateries where you can experience Tanzanian cuisine and hospitality. Visitors often explore nearby attractions, including coffee plantations and the Maasai cultural villages, for an authentic glimpse into the region's traditions. With its blend of urban energy and natural beauty, Arusha provides tourists an ideal mix of adventure and cultural immersion.

5* Chem Chem Lodge Lake Manyara

Full Board

Bordering Tarangire National Park, you'll arrive at Chem Chem Lodge – a distinguished, luxurious property. Each of its secluded yet spacious tented suites overlook the palm-fringed plains, with the palettes and textures imitating the natural beauty beyond.

Walk or even run through the wild alongside a Maasai warrior or explore local village life. Spend one of your evenings here enjoying sundowners on the edge of Lake Manyara.

As you surrender to a leisurely and tranquil way of life, even the simplest moments become life-long memories. Make the most of your time here by indulging in spa treatments or relaxing at the pool, and pay a visit to a local primary school.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park, located in northern Tanzania, is a gem of natural beauty and biodiversity. Although relatively small compared to other parks in the region, it boasts an extraordinary variety of landscapes and wildlife, making it a must-visit destination. The centrepiece of the park is the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara, which covers two-thirds of its area and provides crucial habitat for countless bird species. Among these are the iconic pink flamingos, whose large flocks create a striking contrast against the blue-green waters, alongside pelicans, storks, and herons, delighting birdwatchers with over 400 species to observe.

Surrounding the lake is a mosaic of ecosystems that include lush groundwater forests, grassy floodplains, acacia woodlands, and the dramatic escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. These diverse habitats support a wide range of wildlife. Visitors often encounter herds of elephants, giraffes, zebras, and buffalo grazing in the open areas, while the dense forests are home to blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, and baboons. Lake Manyara is also famous for its population of tree-climbing lions, a unique behaviour that continues to fascinate researchers and tourists alike. Hippos can be seen lounging in the waters, and the park’s elusive leopards occasionally make an appearance.

The dry season, from late June to October, is ideal for game viewing as animals congregate near water sources, and the vegetation is less dense, making wildlife easier to spot. This period is also perfect for exploring the park’s landscapes, as the Rift Valley escarpment and lake views are at their most striking. From November to May, the wet season transforms the park into a lush, green haven, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts as migratory species join the resident birds. During this time, the park is less crowded, and the scenery is exceptionally vibrant, though wildlife viewing may be slightly more challenging due to the dense foliage.

Days 5 - 8

5* Nyasi Migrational Camp

Full Board

Experience the thrill of adventure and exploration in one of Africa's most renowned landscapes. Nyasi Migrational Camp is your home for the next few nights: an authentic, explorer-style tented camp that moves twice yearly with the Great Migration, allowing you a front row seat to one of nature's greatest spectacles.

Northern Serengeti

Northern Serengeti is a remote and beautiful part of the Serengeti ecosystem. It feels wild, open and far away from busy tourist areas. This region is best known for dramatic river crossings during the Great Migration, when thousands of wildebeest and zebra move across the plains and cross the Mara River. The scenery is a mix of rolling grasslands, rocky hills and river valleys, giving it a very natural and untouched feel.

The main sights to visit include the Mara River, where the famous migration crossings take place between roughly July and October, depending on rainfall. Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra gather at the riverbanks before making the dangerous crossing, often with crocodiles waiting in the water. Lions, leopards and cheetahs are also common in this area, following the herds. Even outside migration season, the Northern Serengeti offers excellent game viewing, with resident wildlife throughout the year. Game drives are the main activity, and some camps offer guided walks in certain areas.

The best time to visit the Northern Serengeti is from July to October, when the migration is usually in the area and river crossings are most likely. The weather is generally dry and wildlife viewing is very good. The not so good time to visit is during the long rains from March to May, when heavy rain can make travel more difficult and the migration will usually be in other parts of the Serengeti. However, this time of year is quieter, with fewer vehicles and very green landscapes.

The Northern Serengeti feels more exclusive than the central part of the park. Camps are more spread out, and visitor numbers are lower. It is ideal for travellers who want a classic safari experience in a wilder setting, especially those hoping to witness one of Africa’s most dramatic natural events.
