Tour Highlights

If you want to experience the very best of Brazil’s wildlife and natural landscapes, combining the Pantanal with the Amazon is an ideal choice. The Pantanal is the country’s top location for spotting jaguars, while the Amazon offers an extraordinary immersion into the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Spending around three nights in each region gives you enough time to enjoy their highlights, with the necessary overnight stops in Manaus on either side of your Amazon tour.

After exploring the inland wilderness, we can take you to one of several windy coastal areas in northern Brazil. For this itinerary, we recommend Icaraizinho, a charming seaside village that offers excellent Wingfoiling, Kitesurfing and Windsurfing all in one easy, relaxed location.

Days 1 - 4

4* Caiman - South Pantanal

Full Board with game drives

The trip will start with The Pantanal, staying at the Caiman Ranch, one of the best lodges in the Pantanal for travellers who want high chances of seeing jaguars and other iconic wildlife. You reach it by flying to Campo Grande and then continuing by road for around three to four hours into the wetlands, with wildlife often visible along the way.

Caiman offers some of the most reliable jaguar sightings in South America, along with giant anteaters, capybaras, caimans and exceptional birdlife. The guiding is excellent, and the lodge combines real wilderness with very comfortable accommodation.

The best time to visit is from June to October (which coincides nicely with the main wind season of Northern Brazil), when the dry season concentrates animals around the waterways and makes wildlife viewing at its very best.

Pantanal

The Pantanal is the largest continuous wetland on Earth, recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. Celebrated for its untouched beauty, this vast biome thrives as a living mosaic where rich wildlife harmonizes with the traditions of the Pantaneiro people. Here, jaguars prowl along riverbanks, colourful macaws soar through the skies, and a unique diversity of flora and fauna offers an experience that captivates the senses.

Divided into the Northern Pantanal and Southern Pantanal, each region showcases distinct landscapes, wildlife, and cultural experiences. Together, they reveal the full splendour and diversity of this extraordinary ecosystem.

Southern Pantanal - The Southern Pantanal in Mato Grosso do Sul captivates with its predominantly flat topography, punctuated by elevations, baías, and water mirrors that reflect the endless skies. Here, the legendary Rio Negro meanders through a landscape of tranquil waterways and sprawling floodplains. This dynamic environment offers prime opportunities for wildlife encounters, including the elusive jaguar, often seen patrolling the riverbanks and dense forests.

Dry (July to October) - This is the season of wildlife!  A diverse range of species can be observed, such as the great jaguars, coatis, tapirs, and many bird species entering their reproductive period. There is no rain (though wildfires may occur).

The Biodiversity - This destination offers an unrivalled opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts with an extraordinary array of wildlife.

Jaguar Sightings - This biome is one of the world’s premier destinations for observing jaguars in their natural habitat, a rare and awe-inspiring experience.

The Pantaneiro Culture - Immerse yourself in the traditions of the Pantaneiro people, discovering their strategies for living in harmony with the natural world.

Stunning Landscapes - From vast floodplains to winding rivers, the Pantanal offers breathtaking views, particularly during the rainy season when the landscape transforms into a natural mirror.

Rainy (November & December) - The landscape turns greener, making it an excellent time for birdwatching. Large groups of birds gather, especially Tuiuiús, jabiru storks, and macaws of every color (with fewer mammals visible).

Weather - The average temperature in the Pantanal ranges from about 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) year-round.

Wildlife Safaris - Take guided 4x4 tours through the wetlands to observe the region's incredible biodiversity. These safaris allow visitors to spot iconic species like jaguars, capybaras, caimans, and a wide variety of birdlife, including the majestic tuiuiú stork.

Birdwatching - The Pantanal is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 650 species, making it one of the best places in the world for this activity. Early morning and late afternoon are ideal times for birdwatching, as you can spot species such as herons, macaws, and kingfishers.

Boat Tours and Canoeing - Exploring the waterways of the Pantanal by boat or canoe offers a close-up view of the lush landscapes and abundant wildlife. These excursions provide opportunities to spot caimans, river otters, and a variety of aquatic birds.

Horseback Riding - Ride through the expansive floodplains and forests of the Pantanal on horseback. This is a great way to experience the landscape and observe wildlife from a different perspective.

Days 4 - 9

4* Juma Amazon Lodge

Full Board with trips

The next stage of your wildlife journey takes you into the Amazon. To reach it, you will fly to Manaus, usually via São Paulo. Because of the flight and transfer times, a three-night stay in the Amazon normally requires one overnight in Manaus before and after, giving you a total of five nights for this part of the trip.

The transfer from Manaus to Juma Lodge takes around four hours and is split between road and boat, carrying you deep into the rainforest. Juma Lodge is ideal for travellers who want to be surrounded by true Amazon wilderness in a remote, natural setting. For guests who prefer a higher level of comfort and have a larger budget, we can recommend excellent alternatives with upgraded facilities.

Brazilian Amazon

Getting to a rainforest lodge in Brazil usually begins in Manaus, where small boats or seaplanes take guests deep into the jungle. The journey follows winding rivers lined with towering trees, their branches filled with birds, butterflies, and the occasional movement of a monkey leaping through the canopy. The further you go, the quieter it becomes until only the sounds of nature remain.
The lodges are designed to bring comfort without disturbing the beauty of the forest. Built with natural wood and open to the fresh air, they offer spacious rooms with soft beds, elegant furnishings, and large windows that let in the sights and sounds of the jungle. Many have private pools, outdoor showers, and wide balconies with hammocks, perfect for relaxing while watching the river or the treetops. Meals feature fresh, local ingredients—tropical fruits, just-caught fish, and flavours inspired by the region.

Guests can explore the rainforest through guided trips led by experienced locals who know the land and its wildlife. Morning boat rides drift through mist-covered waters, where pink dolphins surface and exotic birds call from the trees. Daytime walks through the jungle reveal giant trees, hidden waterfalls, and tiny creatures that blend into the forest. Canoe trips take guests through flooded areas where the reflections of the trees create a dreamlike world. In the evening, night safaris offer the chance to spot glowing insects, silent owls, and even caimans resting along the riverbanks. Some lodges also offer visits to small local communities, where people share their traditions and knowledge of the rainforest.

Days 9 - 14

5* Club de Mar

Breakfast

Now it’s time for some wind! From Manaus, we will fly you to the north of Brazil, either to Fortaleza or Jericoacoara, for our suggested stay in Icaraizinho. The transfer takes about 3 hours from Fortaleza or about 2 hours from Jericoacoara, depending on your arrival airport.

This coastline offers a wide choice of resorts and small properties, each suited to different budgets and wind sports. Once we understand your specific requirements, preferred sport, and overall trip length, we can tailor the accommodation and location to your needs.

Icaraizinho

This is a very special part of Northern Brazil offering a tranquil and charming location with some amazing windsurfing conditions for all levels. The name icaraizinho refers to a small beach fishing town consisting of a handful of restaurants, shops and basic amenities. The beach here is stunning and very wide. We think that a windsurfing holiday to Icaraizinho is best done for around 3-5 days in combination with other parts of this stunning and huge coastline. A longer duration may work well if you are considering a very relaxing romantic break with a non-windsurfing partner or family.

When planning a windsurfing holiday to Brazil it is especially important you get the best advice on the appropriate accommodation and windsurf location for your budget and skill level. As with a lot of destinations, there tends to be just a handful of really good quality accommodations and windsurf schools. Planet Windsurf Holidays are Brazil specialists who have travelled extensively around the coast of this amazing country. Please call us for expert advice and we will do our best to make sure you get the best windsurf holiday to Brazil.
