Great service yet again from the team at Planet. You guys really know your stuff. Mauritius was one of the best windsurf locations I've been in over 30 years on the water.

Excellent! Zoe

The Wind In The Algarve
The “Nortada” - the Portuguese north wind gets accelerated by the surrounding landscape which allows wind speeds between 13 and 30 knots building throughout the day, when other parts of the Algarve are calm. The mornings are best for beginner lessons, or surfing as the wind is light, whereas the afternoons are more suited for experienced kiters and windsurfers when the wind is much stronger.
Being a northerly wind, it blows cross offshore at Sagres and Meia Praia, but side shore at the wave spots on the West Coast. Though offshore wind is not always ideal for learning, our partner kitesurf, windsurf, and SUP centre offers full safety boat cover, operated by trained staff members.
The Windsurfing Spots In The Algarve
There are two main windsurfing spots in the Algarve, our partner windsurf school has a centre in both.
Meia Praia
Meia Praia in the Algarve is a 2km long sandy beach, which offers the full list of activities along with a safe learning zone. The wind is offshore here, though the center has safety boat cover for all their clients.
A full range of courses from beginner to advanced are available through our partner windsurf centre, along with rental.
The 4* Vila Gala, 5* Yellow Hotel, and 3* Dom Pedro Apartments are all within a very short walking distance of the center.
Sagres
Our windsurf school is Sagres is located at the stunning 5* Martinhal Hotel, and offers only activities without an engine, making it a very peaceful place. All levels of windsurfers are welcome here, with a full range of courses offered by the centre, from beginner to advance, along with rental. The wind is also offshore here, though safety cover is provided for all clients.
Wave spots
The waves in Portugal are found on the west coast, where the wind is more side shore. Our partner windsurf centre will rent equipment for you to take it to your own spot, though the insurance will not be valid. They can also provide transport to the waves for a fee. If you would like to travel to the wave spots at points in your windsurf holiday in the Algarve, we recommend staying at the Martinhal, as it is much closer to the west coast.
Activities In The Algarve
Activities available are Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Sailing, Parasailing, Surfing, Body Boarding, Skim Boarding, Kayaking, Peddle Boats, Wakeboarding, Waterskiing, Knee Boards, Inflatable Tubing, and Jet Skiing. The Algarve really does offer everything!
Surfing in particular is very popular in Portugal, hosting the massive annual Ripcurl Pro Surfing competition on Bells Beach.
Other activities include scuba diving courses and excursions, fishing and sailing catamaran trips, bicycle hire and guided tours, hiking, pilates, yoga, aqua aerobics, zumba and body fit classes, tennis, horse riding, golf, hot air balloon, skydiving and helicopter tours, jeep safaris and city tours.
Nightlife In The Algarve
For those hungry for night life, the Algarve will always be a good option, particularly in peak season (June, July and August), and a little more selectively in the off season when you should head to places like Sagres, Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Vilamoura, Faro, Tavira and Monte Gordo.
