Why You'll Love Windsurfing In Algarve And Sagres!

  • The Algarve offers something for everyone with a host of exciting activities for everyone to enjoy
  • A safe learning zone with amazing all-inclusive accommodation right on site
  • 300 days of sun per year with great water temperatures

Windsurfing Holiday To The Algarve

Lagos is the heart of the west Algarve and beautifully retains its small town charm. Ideally situated just under an hour from Faro airport Lagos is also the terminal of the Algarve railway. Lagos has its own modern marina, beach cafes, golf courses and within its ancient walls lies a network of bars, restaurants, year round entertainment and a bustling nightlife to suit everyone.

Lagos may be the hub of many of our activities on offer from April - October, but the unspoilt natural park which follows the south coast to Sagres (the end of the world) all the way up along the dramatic west coast, hosts a multitude of scenic dirt tracks, quaint villages, secluded beaches and inspiring cliffs, all worth a visit if you're not already staying there. The Algarve offers something for everyone with a long list of activities available through our centres, a wide range of accommodation, from 3* apartments to luxurious 5* beachfront hotels, and nearby towns offering a great atmosphere both night and day!

Algarve weather and landscape: - 300 days of sun per year. - Few days with less than 15° water temperature in wintertime. - Untapped nature. - Beautiful towns with great party scene and rural villages.

The Wind In The Algarve

The “Nortada” - the Portuguese north wind gets accelerated by the surrounding landscape which allows wind speeds between 13 and 30 knots building throughout the day, when other parts of the Algarve are calm. The mornings are best for beginner lessons, or surfing as the wind is light, whereas the afternoons are more suited for experienced kiters and windsurfers when the wind is much stronger.

Being a northerly wind, it blows cross offshore at Sagres and Meia Praia, but side shore at the wave spots on the West Coast. Though offshore wind is not always ideal for learning, our partner kitesurf, windsurf, and SUP centre offers full safety boat cover, operated by trained staff members.

The Windsurfing Spots In The Algarve

The only location with a great windsurf set up in The Algarve is in Sagres, around a 25 minute drive from Lagos.  Our partner windsurf school in Sagres is located at the stunning 5* Martinhal Hotel.

The wind in Sagres is mostly side to side off shore, making the water conditions very flat - perfect for learning or blasting. The best wind season is the European summer month, although there can be some more unpredictable good winds in Spring and Autumn.

Activities In The Algarve

Activities available are Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Sailing, Parasailing, Surfing, Body Boarding, Skim Boarding, Kayaking, Peddle Boats, Wakeboarding, Waterskiing, Knee Boards, Inflatable Tubing, and Jet Skiing. The Algarve really does offer everything!

Surfing in particular is very popular in Portugal, hosting the massive annual Ripcurl Pro Surfing competition on Bells Beach.

Other activities include scuba diving courses and excursions, fishing and sailing catamaran trips, bicycle hire and guided tours, hiking, pilates, yoga, aqua aerobics, zumba and body fit classes, tennis, horse riding, golf, hot air balloon, skydiving and helicopter tours, jeep safaris and city tours.

Nightlife In The Algarve

For those hungry for night life, the Algarve will always be a good option, particularly in peak season (June, July and August), and a little more selectively in the off season when you should head to places like Sagres, Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Vilamoura, Faro, Tavira and Monte Gordo.

See What Our Clients Say

We were recommended the Martinhal. At the price we paid it was very good - a real bargain and we loved the resort. We had read some negative reviews about the Martinhal and don't agree with them. It is a great hotel with huge rooms, friendly staff, great breakfast, a beautiful location and lots of activities offered. It was all great on the first day. On the second, my husband had a different instructor, who didn't pay attention at all. My husband, who is a first timer, was heading towards a rocky area and the instructor never noticed. He fell, couldn't get up, and still nothing. He hurt himself and people at the beach came to help. Only then did the instructor, who had been on the phone all along, came by. If it weren't for that, we would have been very satisfied as all else went really well. The weather did affect the conditions and made it appropriate for advanced level only, but before that it was perfect.
