Lion Sands Lodge

Africa has been called the greatest show on earth, and Lion Sands presents a safari that plays out like a highlights reel. The reserve conserves 5 000ha (12 500ac) of a habitat that is home to the highest and most diverse concentration of wildlife in the southern hemisphere. You will see all of Africa’s iconic species – lion leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and zebra – along with a supporting cast of no less intriguing 137 mammal species and over 450 varieties of bird. The safaris present an adventure that is wild, and then some!

The lodges, set along the banks of the perennial Sabie River, each have breath-taking views – no one more inspiring than the next. Every day, the appearance of animals at the water’s edge presents you with a natural theatre.

Backed by luxury accommodation – where comforts, service, food and wine are equally well-considered – this is a safari in style, an African original. That being said, each Lion Sands’ lodge has its own special allure. The one for you will depend entirely on who you are, and what you are looking for.

River Lodge – The Original

River Lodge is the Eden of the More children’s youth and first Lion Sands lodge to welcome guests, who between visits have married, become parents, and whose children have grown and now come to stay. And we have watched the lodge grow up, too. It recently reopened after an extensive renovation, with 18 rooms and open guest areas that have introduced a new sense of brightness and space. This is where lovers and families come together and share extraordinary experiences.

Narina Lodge – Organic Chic

This lodge on the river has a wonderful sense of remoteness and peace. Its nine luxury Suites perch on stilts among 100-year-old trees just up from the water, and link to a spa sala and intimate lodge via elevated walkways. This shared space is enhanced by natural décor and open design extending out to generously furnished decks. From here there are views of animals feeding on the opposite bank, and you can engage in the social chatter this inevitably stirs or meditate on the rustle of the leaves.

Tinga Lodge – Traditional Elegance

For the nostalgic, Tinga Lodge opens onto river frontage with a camp-style look reminiscent of the ‘Out of Africa’ era. But far from feeling old-fashioned, a new energy has arrived with décor that is perennially fashionable and classically romantic. The nine Suites, each with a plunge pool, feel definitely private – set apart on their own piece of high bank over the water – though the main lodge’s shared areas invite mingling, in the lounge, at the poolside and around the boma fire.

Ivory Lodge – Natural Luxury

Ivory Lodge is a clean-lined masterpiece. Just eight low-slung Villas of glass, wood and concrete meld into the riverscape. The lodge attracts those in search of time away in their own space. From your bed, deck or private plunge pool, this is one of the best places to look in on Africa – uninterrupted. Here, hospitality is designed entirely around YOU and luxury – much more than a sophisticated room in an exotic location – has substance.

Hi’Nkweni Villa – The Exclusive Tinga Experience

This stand-alone Villa off in the bush, makes the Tinga experience exclusively yours. It’s spacious and secluded enough to do your own thing, but helping hands and a wilderness of experiences are never far off. The Villa’s complete privacy and please-all service – including your personal hospitality team, field guide and game viewer – make it ideal for multigenerational families or groups of friends looking to relax and explore.
