Dakhla Windsurfing Holidays Overview

Dakhla is a small town in the western Sahara, about two hours' flight from Casablanca. It sits on a peninsula on the Atlantic coast, and south of the town is a huge lagoon with wind almost all year round. For windsurfing, it's hard to think of anywhere better.

You can sail here in any month. December and January are the lightest months, and even then the wind is still 60% reliable. The water is flat, with big shallow areas, so if you're learning or improving it's about as easy as windsurfing gets.

Places to stay in Dakhla have got a lot better in recent years, and some of them are now real luxury. That means you can bring a partner or family who don't windsurf, as long as they're happy somewhere remote. We hand-pick every place we offer here. Windsurf Spots In Dakhla

Main Lagoon - Where to start… the lagoon is enormous so you can launch either directly in front of your chosen accommodation inside the lagoon or hitch a ride on the rescue boat to one of the many other spots around the lagoon. The choices are endless but all offering super flat water conditions with very clean and consistent wind. This is ideal for beginner or improvers as the water is flat and the conditions are super easy.

Wave sport - For the more advanced windsurfers a visit to one of the wave spots on a wind day offers 2-4 metre peeling waves with side to side offshore wind….awesome wave sailing conditons! There really is something for all levels in Dakhla.

When The Wind Drops In Dakhla

Days without wind are rare in Dakhla, but there are some good trips for when one comes along:

• The White Dune, where the lagoon meets the desert
• The Asmaa hot spring, where sulphur water comes out at 38°C
• Dragon Island, with its fiddler crabs and flamingos
• A catamaran trip, with a chance of dolphins and, if you're lucky, orcas
• A Saharawi desert village, for traditional tea and camels
• A quad or buggy ride between the desert and the lagoon
• The Sebkha of Imlili, an oasis in the Sahara
• Puerto Rico beach, right on the Tropic of Cancer
• The Talha oyster park, or a boat fishing trip
• Dakhla town and its craft centre, or the fishing port when the trawlers come back in

Depending on where you stay, you can also surf.

One practical point: only a few places here have reliable wifi. If you need it for work, say so when you enquire and we'll point you to them. Elsewhere, expect it to be slow and patchy.
