Greece is no longer a cheap country. Prices have rocketed since the adoption of the euro in 2002. ATMs are to be found in every town large enough to support a bank – and certainly in all the tourist areas. If you’ve got MasterCard or Visa/Access, there are plenty of places to withdraw money. Credit cards are now an accepted part of the commercial scene in Greece just about everywhere. The main reason to carry travellers cheques rather than cash is the protection they offer against theft. They are, however, losing popularity as more and more travelers opt to put their money in a bank at home and withdraw it at ATMs as they go.

Greece can be divided into a number of main climatic regions. The Attica Peninsula, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete, and the central and eastern Peloponnese have a more typically Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and milder winters. In July and August, the mercury can soar to 40°C (over 100°F) in the shade just about anywhere in the country. July and August are also the months of the meltemi, a strong northerly wind that sweeps the eastern coast of mainland Greece (including Athens) and the Aegean Islands, especially the Cyclades. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Greece; specifically May, June, September and October.

No jabs are required to travel to Greece, but a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required if you are coming from an infected area. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that all travellers should be covered for diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella and polio.

Crete Windsurf Holidays

Rhodes North Windsurf Holidays

Rhodes is the second largest of the Greek islands and has long been a very popular summer sun holiday destination with Northern Europeans - there are lots of flights from many regional airports. Rhodes Town in the North of the island is a mixture of historical buildings, cobbled small streets lined with shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as having buzzing nightlife if you want it. Rhodes can be a little bucket and spade in places but also has considerable charm and character.

Leading southwards from Rhodes Town is a long stretch of hotel-lined beaches, including Ixia and Ialyssos where the best windsurfing is and a brilliant selection of windsurf centres. Within walking distance of the windsurf locations, there are a number of well-priced hotels as well as a superb luxury hotel. This makes Rhodes a great place for a short-haul family windsurf holiday as well as a more focused pure windsurf trip for solo travellers or firends.

Rhodes South Windsurf Holidays

Prasonisi in a small wind haven at the very far south of the Island of Rhodes, approximately a 1 and a half hour drive from Rhodes airport. This resort is dedicated to kitesurfers and windsurfers with very reliable strong wind, super centres with the very latest equipment, and both super flat water and small waves spot right next to each other. Prasonisi is the ideal resort for those who want to spend as much time on the water as possible as that is the only reason people stay here! The accommodations are quite basic, but ideally located right on the beach, and in a totally unspoilt area of this beautiful island. There are no swimming pools, bars or other resort facilities that come with the more general holiday resorts. However, for the windsurfer or kitesurfer this place is absolute heaven!
