Windsurfing the incredible island of Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Canary Islands, however, it remains as one of the least developed. This, along with the island’s stunning topography and incredible coastline make it a windsurfing paradise.

Along the east coast, you will find the majority of the good beaches while the west coast is a bit rockier and exposed to the Atlantic swell. In the north of the island is where you will find the main tourist resort of Corralejo and in the south-east you can discover quieter beach resorts perfect for windsurfing holidays for families or the avid windsurf traveller.

Here are some of the bests spots on Fuerteventura for windsurfing:

In the north of the island at Corralejo is the stunning windsurfing beach called Flag Beach. The surrounding area and most of the beach is part of a beautiful nature reserve. At this spot, the wind generally blows side to side on from the left. Here you will find some small waves along the beach and some great flat water sections. The lagoon offers flat, calm waters and is a fun place to learn to windsurf or to improve your level in a safe and social environment. This spot is also a great destination for families with its amazing hotels and stunning beaches.

The Gran Hotel Atlantis is considered to be one of the best hotels in Fuerteventura. This five-star hotel has a grand Neo-Mudejar architecture with warm Canarian interior and a pool surrounded by a tropical garden. The hotel also enjoys idyllic views towards the neighbouring islands of Los Lobos and Lanzarote. It also offers incredible spa facilities and luxurious accommodation.

Costa Calma

Costa Calma is home to one of the best windsurfing spots on the island at Matas Blanca. It is in this stunning region of the island that you will find amazing flat water blasting conditions the whole year around. This spot on Fuerteventura is well suited to either dedicated windsurfers or those travelling with non-windsurf partners or families. In Costa Calma, the wind blows in a cross offshore direction which creates the glassy flat water that is perfect for speed sailing.

The newly opened hotel in Costa Calma is the R2 Sercotel. This hotel is one of the best on the island and offers incredible facilities. Enjoy fantastic accommodation at a hotel that is perfect for travelling families. It has a kids club and tons of fun activities to take part in. You can enjoy these activities or go windsurfing at one of the best spots on the island just next to the hotel.

Sotavento, with its excellently reliable wind, is a great windsurfing spot and perfect holiday destination. This destination is ideal as either a dedicated windsurf holiday or a family holiday. Sotavento offers a variety of conditions depending on the time of year and location. Here you will be lucky enough to find both super flat shallow lagoons as well as incredible wave sailing spots. The best wind in Sotavento is between April and October, however, it is possible to get some great conditions in winter.

The Meliá Gorriones Hotel is set on a 30km long beach in a protected natural environment. This stunning hotel offers two outdoor swimming pools, a spa with Turkish baths, an onsite watersports centre, tennis and volleyball courts, a mini club for ages 5-12 with a playground, kids pool, organised activities and even stargazing in the hotel’s own observatory. Just a short flight from the UK makes this an ideal destination for a family holiday.
