Windsurfing competitions in Bonaire

One of the Caribbean’s most striking islands, Bonaire, will set the scene for three fantastic windsurfing competitions in June of 2017. Lying 40 miles north of Venezuela and making up one-third of the Dutch Antilles, this unspoiled island boasts turquoise oceans, steady trade winds all year long, and an average temperature of 30°C – making it the perfect destination for windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing and diving.

Between 17 and 21 June 2017 Bonaire will host the second edition of the Défi Wind competition. Organised by Phillipe Bru and 41-time world champion windsurfer Bjorn Dunkerbeck, the event will be run out of the magnificent Sorobon Beach Hotel.

The aim of the event – to sail for as many miles as possible between two buoys in a set time frame. Kitesurfers and Windsurfers are both invited with different categories for each sport as well as for the different genders and age groups.

Immediately after the Défi Wind, the Sorobon will also open up its doors to the Sorobon Masters and Dunkerbeck Speed Challenge 2017 which will run until 25 June 2017. The Dunkerbeck GPS Speed Challenge is a pro-am event open to all ages with the aim being to break your personal best time. The Sorobon Masters will see windsurfers compete in different disciplines, including slalom, freestyle, speed and even a division for rookies. Last year was a great success with consistent winds that welcomes 66 slalom competitors, 21 freestyle competitors and 39 Dunkerbeck Speed Challenge competitors, the youngest of which was 8 years old and the eldest competitor was 70!

Aside from the events themselves there will be a lot of additional activities organised to make this a holiday to remember. This means lunches, dinners and parties! The Sorobon Beach Hotel, which is located on the shores of Lac Bay lagoon, also offers a secluded beach where you and your family can relax or enjoy the many watersports on offer at the hotel.
