Bonaire is one of three islands in the Caribbean making up the Dutch Antilles or ABC islands and is one of the least tourist-developed and visited of the islands. It is a true paradise island destination with incredible azure waters and striking scenery both on land and under the sea. The incredible wind and flat waters of Lac Bay also mean it is a haven for windsurfers.

Here are our top reasons for visiting Bonaire in 2018.

Perfect windsurfing for all levels

The lagoon at Lac Bay is perfectly protected from the ocean by a big coral reef on one side and large mangrove forest on the other. This has created the perfect windsurfing environment for any skill level and the shallow crystal clear waters allow you the opportunity to windsurf without a wetsuit.

The wind in Bonaire is fairly good all year but the best wind period is between May and July with the least wind occurring in October and November.

The steady onshore trade winds create perfect conditions and attract all kinds of windsurfers, from freestylers to beginners wanting to learn to windsurf. The flat water and bump and jump conditions also provide a great training ground for getting into the sport.

Brand new windsurf centre

Sorobon Beach Resort has partnered with Bjorn Dunkerbeck and Philippe Bru to open The Dunkerbeck Pro Center in January of 2018. This great windsurf centre offers courses for all levels from beginners to experienced and professionals.

The new centre offers windsurfing enthusiasts a unique opportunity to experience some of the best windsurfing in the world. Imagine waist-deep waters stretching for over 2km engulfed in constant strong winds! It promises safety for beginners and only fun for professionals.

The equipment for rental includes some of the best windsurf brands in the world and the instructors and staff are professionals in their field and will always help with great enthusiasm.

Sorobon Apartments are now open

Sorobon Beach Resort have just opened the new Sorobon Apartments. These comfortable apartments are located only 1.5 km from Sorobon Beach at the east side of the island.

The accommodation offers 10 lovely spacious apartments. There are modern and furnished studios, as well as one or two bedroom apartments. The apartments are have fully equipped kitchenettes and big terraces and balconies that overlook the magnificent Lac and Sorobon Bays.

When staying at the apartments, you will have full access to all of the amenities the Sorobon Beach, Wellness, and Windsurf Resort.

Newly refurbished Sorobon Beach Hotel

The popular and extremely tranquil Sorobon Beach Hotel has just refurbished its chalets and restaurants.

This hotel now boasts a stunningly charming beach-style design in the delightful blue chalets. The resort has a private beach with shaded cabanas and lounge chairs and the shallow bay in front of the hotel is protected by a coral reef and is ideal for swimmers, snorkelers and windsurfers.

It’s outside the hurricane belt

Perfectly situated in the deep Southern Caribbean, Bonaire sits just outside the hurricane belt. This means that the island suffered none of the devastating effects from the 2017 storm season. That means the reef is as beautiful as ever and accommodations are fully operational.

The island lies just 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela and avoids the path of most storms. Bonaire averages only 22 inches of rainfall per year and the mild temperatures and cooling trade winds make it a perfectly temperate climate.

Incredible diving for those non-windy days

For those days when the wind refuses to blow, why not take to the underwater world and try some of the islands scuba diving or snorkelling adventures. Bonaire offers a pristine underwater environment with access to many locations for shore or boat diving.

The island accommodates diving or snorkelling for every skill level, from beginner to advanced divers.
