Tour description

This itinerary combines a relaxing week at Langebaan Lagoon followed by a week exploring the Cape and the breathtaking beauty of the Garden Route (including whale watching from Hermanus) without feeling like you are being rushed. Each property is especially selected to give you the most out of each area in affordable accommodation that does not stint on quality or service, ensuring that you arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend.

The second week around Cape Town and the Garden Route can be arranged as self-drive or we can provide a private guide to escort you throughout the week.

South Africa is one of the best destinations worldwide for watching marine mammals, whether from land or from boats, with spectacular annual visits from the southern right and humpback whales and enormous pods of dolphins year-round. Every year, southern right whales migrate from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to warmer climates, reaching South Africa. The country's coastal waters teem with the giant animals, mating, calving and rearing their young – and giving whale-watchers spectacular displays of raw power and elegant water acrobatics.

The curious humpback whale can be seen between May to December, moving up along the coast from Hermanus to St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal. The medium-sized Bryde's whale can be spotted all year round, and while rare, orcas can also be seen.

Founded in 1922, this historical town was once a whaling station and it has now been transformed into a holiday destination on the West Coast. It is a mecca for nature-lovers and water sports enthusiasts. The lagoon is part of a protected area, the West Coast National Park.

After Cape Town and Stellenbosch, Swellendam is the third oldest settlement in South Africa. Laying at the foot of the beautiful Langeberg mountains this place is not only famous for its youngberries but as well as for its architecture and its history.

The town and its district were named after the governor of the Cape and his wife, Hendrik Swellengrebel and Helena Ten Damme. In time, a village was established opposite the Drostdy, across the Koornlands River, where artisans, including numerous wainwrights, and traders settled. To travellers and explorers, the services of these village folk were indispensable, as Swellendam was the last outpost of civilisation on the eastern frontier.
