Windsurf Holidays To Sotavento

Fuerteventura is the second largest island on the Canary Islands, although one of the least developed. You arrive at the airport to the north of the island followed by our private transfer down to Sotavento in the south (about 1.5 hours) or we can arrange a hire car as an alternative.

Sotavento has long been regarded as an excellent windsurf destination with extremely reliable wind and only a short flight from the UK. The resort offers the option to either stay in the tourist resort of Costa Calma, or a little further south at the Melia Gorriones Hotel, right by one of the best kitesurf spots.

Sotavento is perfect for either a deciated windsurfing holiday, or it can make for a super family holiday with many hotels offering good family facitlies. Also, The Canary Islands are viewed as a very 'safe' destination.

The Spot

Fuerteventura offers a variety of conditions depending on the time of year and location; from super flat shallow lagoons to full on wave sailing spots. We know this area extremely well so please call us for advice on suitability.

The Wind In Sotavento

The best wind in Sotavento is between April and October, however, it is possible to get some good winter conditions, just not as strong and reliable as the summer. During the windiest days speeds can reach as high as 40+ knots! The wind here also tends to be very gusty as it is off-shore, being funnelled and accelerated through a range of hills behind the resort.

Fuerteventura offers a wide range of activities for the those who do not windsurf as this area is a major holiday destination for many holidaymakers. Surfing, diving, horseriding, trekking and cycling are just some of the activities on offer. In Sotavento there is a good quality hotel overlooking the spot, so this may be more suited to a non-windsurfing partner who is happy to relax around a pool and wander down to the spot at their leisure.

Sotavento evenings are mostly hotel based, relaxing over dinner in one of the hotel bars. A short shuttle bus ride or taxi ride away are the resorts of Costa Calma and Jandia, which offer a low key selection of bars and nightlife. Fuerte Action Café and Restaurant Bar in Costa Calma are popular meeting places from breakfast until late at night.

See What Our Clients Say

Planet Windsurf were very helpful and gave great recommendations. Even though there was a small glitch at the beginning re all-inclusive - it was quickly sorted out. After discussing a number of potential resorts Planet Wimdsurf recommended Melia Gorriones - it did not disappoint. It looked too big and on a lunar landscape when looking at the pictures on the web. It was much better in the flesh. Fabulous views, great food and friendly staff. We enjoyed a good mixture of open water sailing and access to the lagoon - very pleased we went when the lagoon was available. The centre staff were helpful and friendly, we even enjoyed a beach barbeque with the Barracuda I caught on the last day with them. A big thank you to Planet Windsurf for making the recommendation and organising the holiday.
