Sal<\/a> is an idyllic island within the Cape Verde<\/a> islands, located just off the coast of North-West Africa, just south of the Canary Islands. This incredible island offers some of the best windsurfing conditions with a fine-grained sandy beach extends over more than four kilometres. Thanks to its position within the winter trade-wind belt, Sal boast perfect wind and wave conditions from November until May. <\/p>\n

Windsurfing in Sal<\/h5>\n

Windsurfing in Sal is an amazing experience. The cross-offshore wind enables effortless upwind sailing along the various sections of the beach. The main area for windsurfing is Santa Maria located at the southern end of Sal.<\/p>\n

The bay at Santa Maria has a four kilometre stretch of beautiful white sandy beach and this is the best area for both beginners and intermediate windsurfers. There are some fantastic wave spots located near Santa Maria but more experienced windsurfers should head to Ponte Leme<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ponte Leme’s wave spot offers clean and unbreaking waves up to two metres. The most famous wave spot on Sal is at Ponta Preta and has an incredible 3 to 6 metre wave just 50 metres from the shoreline. This is only for advanced windsurfers as there is cross off-shore wind with no safety cover.<\/p>\n

The windsurf centre at Santa Maria is located right on the beautiful beach. Unfortunately, the main centre in St. Maria burnt to the ground just before the current season began. A completely brand-new centre will rise from the ashes for next year: in the meantime, though, there is a fully equipped mini centre right on the beach.<\/p>\n

The other great centre is located at Ponta Leme and is situated on the east coast of the island.  The centre at Ponta Leme offers windsurfing, surfing and SUP lessons and rental.<\/p>\n

These centres offer the top of the range windsurfing gear for rental as well as great instructors that are on hand to improve skills or help beginners get up and hooked on windsurfing.<\/p>\n
