Windsurfing in and around Cape Town

There are very few places in the world where a windsurfer can find perfect wave spots, flat lagoons, a true sense of adventure, amazing culture, fantastic cuisine, amazing wines and all at an affordable price – but this is all possible in and around Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is lucky enough to have one of the most temperate climates in Africa and as a result, it is a favourite for tourists at any time of the year.  However, for the avid windsurfer, the best time to visit is in the summer months, between November and March. These summer months bring the steady and consistent southeast trade wind which blows reliably at about 25-35 knots and makes for daily opportunities to windsurf.

Waves in Cape Town

For more experienced windsurfers, Cape Town is a mecca for wave surfing. The consistent winds blow from November to March during the summer months bringing a fair amount of swell and making incredible wave spots for windsurfers. Some of the best spots for windsurfing can be found on the west coast from Bloubergstrand all the way north towards Melkbosstrand.

Big Bay is one of the best spots to windsurf in this area. Here you will find amazing ridable waves with flat periods between the sets to get some speed. Lagoon Beach is also a great place to windsurf and the nearest spot to the Cape Town city centre. This spot has a large beach and a shallow area that extends for about 50 metres. However, one of the most stunning beaches on this stretch of coastline is Sunset Beach, which is very popular with local windsurfers. This is a spot for more advanced windsurfers as the waves here can get quite large and, depending on the wind direction, are prone to closing out.
