8 reasons to go on a windsurf holiday to Soma Bay

Located just 45 minutes south of Hurghada International Airport, Soma Bay is developing a reputation as one of the best windsurfing spots in the world. But just what is it about the bay that gives it such broad appeal? Here are eight very good reasons why Soma Bay in Egypt should be at the top of your list of places to windsurf.

1. The bay itself

Let’s start with the most obvious advantage. The bay is beautiful, an ideal windsurfing spot. The water is flat and shallow and there are plenty of small boats around to pick you up if you get into trouble.

2. The scenery

We mentioned that it’s beautiful but it’s worth reiterating this point. With the white sands of the Red Sea coast disappearing into the distance and the mountains forming an impressive backdrop, this is a very exhilarating place to windsurf.

3. The wind

This part of Egypt boasts consistently windy conditions for about 75% of the year, although the high season is generally considered to be between April and October. The wind is warm and dry, so you’ll feel like you’re windsurfing in a mild hairdryer. In fact, it’s generally warm and sunny throughout the year.

4. Varied conditions

On the Abu Soma southern side of the lagoon, the side-onshore winds provide easy access to the waist-high water – perfect for beginners and intermediate riders looking to build confidence on the water. The northern Soma Bay side has offshore winds which can be slightly more challenging, but the worst that can happen is that you end up on the beach on the other side of the bay.

5. The access

As mentioned above, at just a 45-minute transfer from Hurghada international, Soma Bay is one of the easiest windsurfing destinations to get to. Transfers are cheap and regular, and flight times from the UK are just over five hours, so it’s a short(ish) haul journey and generally well-priced.

6. Shorter breaks

Unlike many exotic destinations, Soma Bay is close enough to the UK and affordable enough to make even a week-long trip well worth the effort.

7. Accommodation

The infrastructure here is good for visitors, with a choice of accommodation ranging from cheap and cheerful to luxurious, all within striking distance of the beach. Soma Bay is a self-contained community surrounded on three sides by the sea but there is everything here you could need during your stay.

8. Excursions

No visit to Egypt can be complete without delving into the incredible history on offer. The Nile Valley was home to one of the greatest civilisations in human history, from about 3100BC onwards and the remnants of this once mighty empire are still to be seen all around. Take a day off from windsurfing, let your body recover and explore a country with a history dating back further than any other on earth.
